Hey everyone, Tribe of Shabazz here with another interview for Paydirt DFS. Today I’m joined by CKK, one of our subscribers who’s been crushing it in daily fantasy sports. CKK, thanks for joining me today.
CKK:
Thanks for having me, ToS. Always happy to share what’s been working.
ToS:
So last time we spoke, you walked me through your PGA process using the Portfolio Manager. But I know you’ve been having tons of success with NBA as well. Let’s dive into that. First question – when you’re building out your initial portfolio of lineups, are you doing any pre-work? Like adjusting the player pool or setting initial rules?
CKK:
For NBA specifically, I actually don’t do much pre-work, mainly because of the injury news and time constraints. I do have a few key rules though. I remove combos with multiple high-usage players from the same team. I force my lineups to be built more barbell-style to avoid having only mid-range guys that lack ceiling. And I always force a low-owned play into my lineups to help me pass the field.
ToS:
That barbell approach is interesting. So you’re really targeting that ceiling.
CKK:
Exactly. And one more thing – in NBA, I like to make sure I build with at least two to three players in the later games, especially when the slate has uncertain injury news. That gives me late swap equity.
ToS:
Smart. Late swap flexibility is huge. So after you’ve loaded your portfolio into the PM, are you doing any trimming or stratifying at that point?
CKK:
Yeah, at a macro level I like to trim my lineups to those with a positive edge, which also correlates to lower finish percentiles. That’s really the key metric I’m looking at.
ToS:
Got it. Now, the Portfolio Manager has tons of features – you can analyze player exposures, player combinations, all that stuff. Are you utilizing those features in your NBA process?
CKK:
Honestly, in NBA I don’t really utilize the player exposures or combinations analysis, mostly due to time constraints. The slate moves so fast with injury news that I keep my process pretty streamlined.
ToS:
That makes sense. Speed is crucial in NBA. Any other tips or tricks for folks who might be trying out the Portfolio Manager for the first time?
CKK:
First off, I have to give massive credit to James and the amazing PM tool he created. My success is really only possible because of that tool. My advice would be to just keep using it and get your reps in. The more you use it, the faster you get. I’ve gotten my entire NBA build – from importing lineups to the PM trim and stratify process – down to about seven minutes now.
